Now that France’s first lady is a genuine dame de chanson, and the French are all atwitter over the fall of American capitalism, music once again fills the Gallic air. So what better way to capture the new spirit than the re-opening of this storied Parisian music hall? Indeed, its stage has been graced by the likes of Gainsbourg, Brel and Brassens; but the new Les Trois Baudets will not be a bastion of nostalgia, but an incubator for contemporary French and international music, hosting touring acts, listening parties, film screenings and even youth workshops, where budding artistes can literally interact with and cull from their idols. Two bars and a brasserie lend it a touch of joie de vivre. Amusingly, the name actually translates to The Two Mules—proving that the French language can even make donkeys sound sexy.
